| With so many scheduled and charter
flight companies operating services from UK airports
to Florida, the choice can very often be mind boggling. |
| Most of the charter flights
will be destined for Sanford airport which is approximately
thirty miles north west of Downtown Orlando, rather
than Orlando International Airport which is to the
south of Orlando and much closer to the resort areas
around Kissimmee, where the theme parts are situated. |
| The only direct scheduled
flights into Orlando are operated by British Airways
(Gatwick) and Virgin (Gatwick and Manchester). |
The same airlines, along with American
Airlines, also operate direct services from Heathrow
to Miami which is normally the routing of choice
for clients who will be spending their vacations
in the more upmarket Gulf Coast locations of Naples
and Marco island and also in the Fort Myers area. |
| British Airways are the only carrier
to operate directly from Gatwick onto Tampa (four
times weekly) which is once again the usual routing
of choice for those vacationers who will be residing
in the more central parts of the Gulf Coast around
Bradenton, Sarasota, Venice and the St. Petersburg
areas. |
| It is also possible to have an 'open-jaw'
arrangement where more than one centre is involved
i.e. Kissimmee and sarasota / Naples, by flying
into Orlando and out of Miami / Tampa (or vice versa)
normally at no extra cost! |
| A number of US based
carriers i.e. Delta, Continental etc. operate 'indirect'
services from the UK which transit through their
'hub' terminals where a change of plane is required
and where the US Immigration proceedure takes place. |
| These are not the most
popular routings as they require luggage to be collected
at both the hub, prior to going through the immigration
proceedure and again at the final destination airport
in Florida. In additional to what can be a lengthy
stopover in the hub whilst awaiting the connection. |
| In contrast, if a connection
is required, then British Airways do offer extremely
competitively priced add-ons from most UK regional
airports to both Heathrow and Gatwick to connect
with their direct services to Orlando, Tampa and
Miami, without the need to see your luggage again
until you arrive at your destination in Florida. |
